font-size: 100%;\">The way that we communicate non-verbally with our appearance, posture, gesture, gaze and expression can be such a powerful tool in the way that we feel and when communicating with others. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\"> The manner in which you communicate your interpersonal skills are very important.\u00a0 Effective communication is vital if you are going to succeed no matter what you are doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\">The way in which we communicate with people is broken down into components, and it is popularly believed that people to whom we are speaking understand what we say by interpreting these different elements in varying proportions.\u00a0 The 7-38-55 &#8216;rule&#8217; is popular in lore, but it&#8217;s based on a small and limited experiments done in the 1960s by Dr. Albert Mehrabian, and is not meant to cover all scenarios of communication.\u00a0 The studies he did concluded that 7% of communication (intended attitude and feelings mostly) comes through words, 38% through voice, and 55% through facial expressions.\u00a0 However, even if the numbers are not exact in most scenarios, think of my &#8220;3 Vs&#8221; as a general principle:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-size: 100%;\">VERBAL<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]--><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-family: Arial;\">%<\/span><\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\"> of our message is interpreted from the words we use, including grammar.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\">VOCAL<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]--><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-family: Arial;\">%<\/span><\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\"> is picked up from our voice &#8211; speed, tone, pitch, rhythm etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\">VISUAL<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]--><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-family: Arial;\">%<\/span><\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\"> is what the other person sees &#8211; our body language, gestures, environment etc.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\">The \u201c3 Vs\u201d would then make up a fourth \u2013 VIBE \u2013 the overall feeling we send and receive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\">Whole books are written on body language, but here are some quick fixes and recommendations that you should start to put into practice:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Symbol; font-size: 100%;\">\u00b7 <\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Dress to win<\/span><\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\"> \u2013 Look at your appearance and ask yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 54pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Symbol; font-size: 100%;\">\u00b7 <\/span><!--[endif]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\">Do I feel confident?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 54pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Symbol; font-size: 100%;\">\u00b7 <\/span><!--[endif]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\">Do I look confident?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 54pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Symbol; font-size: 100%;\">\u00b7 <\/span><!--[endif]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\">What could I do with my appearance to give me the edge?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Symbol; font-size: 100%;\">\u00b7 <\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Handshakes<\/span><\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\"> \u2013 Never give a limp wrist handshake, make sure it is firm but not too hard<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Symbol; font-size: 100%;\">\u00b7 <\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Smile<\/span><\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\"> a lot more than you have been doing \u2013 even if you are a comedian! Smiles generate trust, openness and more smiles!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Symbol; font-size: 100%;\">\u00b7 <\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Walk tall<\/span><\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\"> with your head and shoulders back. Walk at a quick, controlled pace breathing calmly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Symbol; font-size: 100%;\">\u00b7 <\/span><!--[endif]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\">When you talk to people <b>look them straight in the eye.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Symbol; font-size: 100%;\">\u00b7 <\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Keep on moving<\/span><\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\"> \u2013 Motion creates positive <i>emotion!<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Symbol; font-size: 100%;\">\u00b7 <\/span><!--[endif]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\">If you are ever feeling down, just have a <b>look at your body language<\/b> and change it immediately. You WILL start to feel better and more confident immediately. Take a brisk walk if need be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Symbol; font-size: 100%;\">\u00b7 <\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-family: Arial;\">First impressions count<\/span><\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\"> \u2013 so when you are going to meet people for the first time, think of what first impression you want to give them. A smiling face? A good remark? Firm handshake? Etc. Life is filled with first impressions\u2026over and over and over again!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 18pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Symbol; font-size: 100%;\">\u00b7 <\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Take more notice of other peoples\u2019 body language<\/span><\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\";font-family: Arial; font-size: 100%;\">. You can normally tell what others are feeling by the way that they are moving and using their body too. You can use this to your advantage when you are more aware of it.
