{"id":32,"date":"2011-07-09T23:16:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-09T23:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.communicationcoach.ca\/blog\/?p=32"},"modified":"2015-03-15T20:00:27","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T00:00:27","slug":"the-customer-is-not-always-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.communicationcoach.ca\/blog\/the-customer-is-not-always-right\/","title":{"rendered":"The Customer is NOT Always Right"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;\">A while ago I attended a seminar in Toronto where the presenter talked about the value of good customer service in all types of industries.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He actually has a background in the restaurant and hospitality industries, so as you can imagine there was a lot of discussion about good and bas service at restaurants, and how to handle complaining customers, even if you are sure they are \u2018scamming\u2019 you for free-bees.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>His solution was across-the-board give in and put out.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Give in to their complaints and give them complimentary food, coupons, etc.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I have to admit my stomach was unsettled.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;\">Many of us have heard the mantra \u201c<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">The customer is always right<\/i>.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But my question is, what type of message are we, as a worker, a manager, a company or a society giving when we give in 100% to fraudsters?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Does that very act not devalue our company?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Does it not encourage people to continue to shout loudly for free stuff?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And how do you think your company waitresses, clerks, phone operators etc. feel when they are told they must accept the abuse?<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;\">Years ago when I worked for <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Copelco Capital<\/i><\/b>, a global financial company later taken over by Citibank, I had the dubious honour of working both customer service AND collections!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>So my phone calls were often dealing with angry or complaining clients.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I developed some pretty cool conflict management techniques, which I can share with you another time.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But for today I want to tell you about the time a client called and was complaining loudly, swearing, and not listening to my calm appeals to slow down, and to dignify her language.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;\">I advised her to stop swearing, and when she didn\u2019t stop, and wouldn\u2019t listen to a word I was saying, I simply hung up on her!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, you heard me, I disconnected the call. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;\">She called the company back, asked for my manager and began to complain about my actions.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>My manager told her she would investigate promptly, put the client on hold and came over to my cubicle (<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">p.s.
