{"id":176,"date":"2009-12-15T22:33:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-15T22:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.communicationcoach.ca\/blog\/?p=176"},"modified":"2015-03-31T10:28:58","modified_gmt":"2015-03-31T14:28:58","slug":"english-acronyms-and-short-forms-for-the-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.communicationcoach.ca\/blog\/english-acronyms-and-short-forms-for-the-office\/","title":{"rendered":"English Acronyms and Short Forms for the Office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are a few acronyms that you most likely will come across as you work in a professional setting, like an office.\u00a0 These will <i>come in handy<\/i> (be useful) as you read and write office memos, emails, texts and letters.<\/p>\n<p>Re:\u00a0 This means &#8220;Regarding&#8221;, as in &#8220;regarding (or in regards to) your question\/memo\/email etc.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Appt:\u00a0 This means &#8220;Appointment&#8221;.\u00a0 Be careful not to use &#8220;Apt.&#8221; which actually is short for<br \/>\n&#8220;apartment&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p>ASAP:\u00a0 &#8220;As Soon As Possible&#8221; &#8211; something needs to be done quickly!<\/p>\n<p>ETA:\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;Estimated Time of Arrival&#8221; &#8211; &#8220;What is the ETA on that package from Japan?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dept.:\u00a0 &#8220;Department&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>H.R.:\u00a0 Human Resources.\u00a0 Can also end with &#8220;Manager&#8221;, &#8220;Management&#8221;, &#8220;Department&#8221;, etc.<\/p>\n<p>CEO:\u00a0 &#8220;Chief Executive Officer&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>COO:\u00a0 &#8220;Chief Operations Officer&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>V.P.:\u00a0 &#8220;Vice President&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>VIP:\u00a0 &#8220;Very Important Person&#8221;.\u00a0 &#8220;We were given the VIP treatment by our suppliers today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>RSVP:\u00a0 French &#8211; Respondez sil-vous plait.\u00a0 &#8220;respond if you please&#8221; is the literal translation, but in English we just say &#8220;please respond&#8221;.\u00a0 This can be used in invitations, networking events, conferences, meetings etc.\u00a0 &#8220;John if you want to come to the Christmas party with me you have to rsvp asap, so I know who is riding with me in my van.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>C.C.:\u00a0 &#8220;Carbon Copy&#8221;, or identical copy.\u00a0 Used in memos and emails.\u00a0 This way you can send your email to many people at once.\u00a0 Everyone can see the list of emails in the C.C. section.\u00a0 We also use this in speaking at the office, for example &#8220;Mary can you request a Lunch N&#8217; Learn on communication skills from H.R., and C.C. me on it (the email) please?<\/p>\n<p>B.C.C.:\u00a0 &#8220;Blind Carbon Copy&#8221; &#8211; same as above, but no one except you can see the email addresses in this section.<\/p>\n<p>There are more but this list is a good start.\u00a0 Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>Coach Ric<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are a few acronyms that you most likely will come across as you work in a professional setting, like an office.\u00a0 These will come in handy (be useful) as you read and write office memos, emails, texts and letters.
