{"id":124,"date":"2011-11-04T00:02:00","date_gmt":"2011-11-04T00:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.communicationcoach.ca\/blog\/?p=124"},"modified":"2021-11-03T09:42:46","modified_gmt":"2021-11-03T13:42:46","slug":"buy-a-poppy-wear-a-poppy-remember","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.communicationcoach.ca\/blog\/buy-a-poppy-wear-a-poppy-remember\/","title":{"rendered":"Buy a Poppy, Wear a Poppy &#8211; Remember"},"content":{"rendered":"<table style=\"float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.communicationcoach.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_0200.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.communicationcoach.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_0200.jpg?resize=240%2C320&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">wear a poppy over your heart!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>You will see many people wearing a plastic Poppy (<i>red flower<\/i>) on their lapel (<i>collar<\/i>) these days (Nov 1st &#8211; 11th), in Canada, the UK and maybe some parts of the U.S.A.<\/p>\n<p>November 11th is Remembrance Day (<i>Veteran&#8217;s Day in the US<\/i>) and it is time to remember the fallen soldiers who died in battle in various wars in our history.\u00a0 The tradition started after the end of World War 1.<\/p>\n<p>If you are not sure what wearing the poppy symbolizes, I can help.<\/p>\n<p>1 &#8211; it is a symbol to remember the fallen soldiers who have fought for your\/our country\/freedom<br \/>\n2 &#8211; you wear it on your left lapel\/collar, over your heart, but not on your right side<br \/>\n3 &#8211; it is not a symbol supporting war<br \/>\n4 &#8211; it is not a peace symbol<br \/>\n5 &#8211; it is not a fashion piece (<em>although some people wear beautiful hand-made knitted ones!)<\/em><br \/>\n6 &#8211; money raised goes to help veterans (<i>returned soldiers<\/i>) live a little more comfortably<br \/>\n7 &#8211; You do not have to be born in Canada, UK or USA to wear one.\u00a0 You can wear one to honour your own country&#8217;s losses in previous war.\u00a0 It is about remembering fallen soldiers.<br \/>\n8 &#8211; It is a personal decision, but not a political or religious one.<\/p>\n<p>For me, I wear a poppy every year, without fail.\u00a0 My grandfather, Harold Phillips, fought in WW II, and survived.\u00a0 His brother was not so lucky.\u00a0 I wear a poppy to honour them and their comrades.\u00a0 For me it&#8217;s close to my history and heart.\u00a0 More information can be found here on the Poppy and the history:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legion.ca\/remembrance\/the-poppy\">https:\/\/www.legion.ca\/remembrance\/the-poppy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A famous poem taught in school even today was written by a Canadian Medic in WWI named <i><b>John McCrae<\/b><\/i>.\u00a0 The poem is about poppies growing in Flanders Fields.\u00a0 It is called &#8216;In Flanders Fields&#8217;.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">In Flanders fields the poppies blow<br \/>\nBetween the crosses, row on row,<br \/>\nThat mark our place; and in the sky<br \/>\nThe larks, still bravely singing, fly<br \/>\nScarce heard amid the guns below.<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We are the Dead. Short days ago<br \/>\nWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,<br \/>\nLoved and were loved, and now we lie<br \/>\nIn Flanders fields.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Take up our quarrel with the foe:<br \/>\nTo you from failing hands we throw<br \/>\nThe torch; be yours to hold it high.<br \/>\nIf ye break faith with us who die<br \/>\nWe shall not sleep, though poppies grow<br \/>\nIn Flanders fields.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">John McCrae<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>wear a poppy over your heart!
